DESCRIPTION

Medication management plays a pivotal role in the treatment of mental health conditions. Long-standing psychotropic drug classes continue to play a prominent role in contemporary psychopharmacology, while newer medications are being developed to treat mental disorders based on an expanded understanding of neurobiology and pharmacological research. As such, it is essential for healthcare professionals, particularly those providing mental health services, to have a working knowledge of psychotropic medications.

This seminar examines the mental disorders frequently encountered in clinical practice, a review of medication management and evidence-based psychological and behavioral approaches employed in complementing pharmacological treatment protocols. Throughout the day, representative case studies will be provided to better examine the role of drug treatments for the DSM-5-TR disorders discussed. Participants will leave this seminar with enhanced knowledge and confidence regarding contemporary psychopharmacology.

This training will update and increase knowledge of:

  • Specific drugs of choice for depression, bipolar disorder, the psychotic spectrum, anxiety, insomnia, ADHD, and substance use disorders

  • Therapeutic effects and adverse events linked to medications used to treat the above disorders

  • Classes of prescription drugs frequently abused, today’s marijuana and its many risk factors, the fentanyl crisis

  • Complementary and alternative medicines (CAMs) in treating mental syndromes

  • Other issues: Medical disorders vs. mental conditions, polypharmacy, de-prescribing psychotropic medication, psychedelics, and opioids for depression, mental health apps

Objectives

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the neurotransmitter systems underlying the biological basis for mental disorders and pharmacological treatments

  • Outline the mental syndromes for which psychotropic medications are often prescribed – unipolar depression, bipolar, anxiety spectrum, psychotic spectrum, ADHD

  • Describe the clinical indications, therapeutic benefits, risk factors and common side effects of the major psychotropic medication categories – antidepressants, mood stabilizers, anxiolytics, antipsychotics, psychostimulants

  • Discuss proven, relatable approaches for the behavioral management of the mental syndromes discussed

  • Address the abuse potential among psychotropic medications, early detection, and prevention strategies

  • Discuss complementary and alternative medicines and their role in treating mental syndromes
